Ageing Seminars 2025 - Dr. Moustapha Kassem

On January 23rd , at 11.00am, Lisbon time, we welcome Doctor Moustapha Kassem , who will be presenting “Cellular Senescence and the Biology of Bone Aging: From Mechanism to Therapy”.The seminar will be held at Auditorium 2, Student Hub,University of Coimbra and online. Bio: Professor Moustapha Kassem obtained his medical degree from the Faculty of Medicine, University of Cairo, Egypt, in December 1983, and became a fully registered physician in 1985. He pursued postgraduate sub-specialty training in Internal Medicine and Endocrinology in Denmark. He earned his Ph.D. in 1994 and Dr.Med.Sc. in 1997 from the University of Aarhus, Denmark. From 1993 to 1995, he served as a research fellow in the Endocrine Research Unit at the Mayo Clinic, Rochester, MN, USA.

Since 2002, Professor Kassem has been appointed as a Professor of Molecular Endocrinology and Chief Endocrinologist at the University Hospital of Odense and the University of Southern Denmark, Odense, Denmark. Additionally, he has been an adjunct professor of Stem Cell Biology at the University of Copenhagen, Denmark, since 2013.

Professor Kassem’s research focuses on understanding the mechanisms behind impaired bone formation in aging and osteoporosis. His work aims at developing novel strategies to counteract age-related changes in the musculoskeletal system through the identification of small molecules anabolics and the repurposing of existing medications. Professor Kassem has extensive experience in conducting translational research, conducting experimental clinical trials and commercialization of research results. He has served on many committees evaluating research in Denmark, Sweden, Norway, Finland, Germany and Portugal. He is an associated editor of journals: Bone and Aging Cell.
