Extra Seminar Ageing Seminars 2025 - Dr. Joana Silva

On September 11th , at 2.00pm, Lisbon time, we welcome Doctor Joana Silva, who will be presenting “The Interplay Between Tau and RNA Granules in Stress-Induced Neuronal Dysfunction”.The seminar will be held at Auditório de Patologia Geral, 3rd floor, Faculty of Medicine (Polo I), University of Coimbra.

Bio: Joana Margarida Silva graduated in Applied Biology in 2010 at the School of Sciences, University of Minho, and completed an MSc in Molecular Genetics in 2012. She obtained her PhD in Health Sciences from the School of Medicine, University of Minho, in 2017. In 2018, she was awarded a postdoctoral fellowship from the Canon Foundation, which allowed her to expand her international training at the laboratory of Prof. Takashima (Imperial University, Japan), a leading expert in Tau biology. There, she investigated the role of Tau in nuclear processes, particularly its interplay with RNA-binding proteins. Since 2021, Joana has been an Assistant Researcher at ICVS, funded by FCT, where she leads an independent research line exploring how chronic stress contributes to neurodegeneration. Her work focuses on the dysregulation of RNA metabolism and the pathological accumulation of RNA granules, with particular attention to the role of the Tau protein as a mediator of nuclear dysfunction and synaptic impairment. By integrating cellular and molecular approaches with behavioural read-outs, her research aims to uncover how stress-driven mechanisms accelerate brain pathology in disorders such as Alzheimer's disease and depression
